Blogs remain to be an effective promotional tool today especially for businesses. As such, any entrepreneur who wants to attract customers and promote his or her products and services to more people should seriously consider creating a blog containing informative content.

Reports have noted the many benefits businesses can gain from having a blog. As an example, business to business (B2B) marketers that use blogs receive 67 percent more leads, those who prioritized blogging are 13 times more likely to enjoy positive return on investment (ROI) and companies who blog received 97 percent more links to their website. In addition, blogs are now considered the fifth most trusted source for accurate information online.

When starting a blog or if you have an existing blog, take note of these seven must-haves to ensure your site’s success onward.

Best Layout

Choosing the right and best layout is very important. Keep in mind that how your blog looks will make a huge difference in driving traffic.

You have three options when it comes to layout design. These are the single column, two-column layout with your main content column and one sidebar and the three-olumn layout with two sidebars in addition to the main content column. Each type has its pros and cons but the most popular today is the two-column layout wherein the sidebar puts emphasis on the business goals.

Mobile Version

Any business owner should also consider creating a mobile version of his or her blog. This is essential particularly since a growing number of people now prefer to use mobile devices which they can conveniently carry around every day.

A mobile-friendly blog is one that should have a responsive design. This means, the site features a fluid layout that adjusts itself depending on the screen size being used.

Opt-in Form

Adding an opt-in form is also a must. This feature will help build your list as long as you offer quality and valuable content for your target market. Opt-in forms can be added on any part of your site such as on the sidebar, footer, in floating bars, pop-ups, after a post and in slide-ins.

You can offer newsletter subscription to keep your readers updated or a free ebook or report that contains useful information including tips.

SEO Fields

Do not forget the SEO aspect when creating your blog. For WordPress users, you can install a free plug-in such as the WordPress SEO to create SEO fields for your blog pages. These fields are the title, meta description and keywords.

Fill out these fields and make sure that they are in the right category and have the right tags.

Social Media Buttons

When you have a blog, you would want your readers to easily share your content on social networking sites. You can do this by adding social sharing buttons on each of your web page or at the end of every blog post.

These social media buttons normally pull the title, URL, description and image from your page or blog post when visitors use them for sharing your content that they like.
