It’s always nice to belong to a group of people who share your interests whether in the real world or online. On Facebook, it is possible to create your own group or join an existing group. Sometimes, it may even be that you’re added to a group without you making the request to join.

With the new Facebook interface, you can find the Groups link on the leftmost column in black. Click on the top left corner icon showing three white bars and when the black bar is expanded, look for Groups below the Pages section.

On the Groups page, you will see the list of groups you’re a part of. On the right, there’s a Create Group button which you can click to make your own group.

You will also see an area called Suggested Groups which lists specific groups which might interest you. The suggested groups that show are those in which most of your friends belong to. If you’d like to join, just click the Join Group link you see right on the page below the group’s name where some members are also listed.

Engaging with the Group

To interact with your group, simply click on the name on the list and starting posting updates on the message box. Other than a text post, you can also add a photo or video, ask a question or add a file.

All of members of the group will then receive a notification about your post. Any comment made on your post will also show on your news feed.

Creating a Group

Any Facebook user has the ability as well to create his own group on this social media platform. To do this, just click the Create Group button on the middle top of the page.

A box with several fields will then display with various fields you need to fill out. These are the group name, members you want to add to the group and three privacy options – open, closed and secret.

When you have completed filling out the needed information, click the Create button below. Those who have been added to the group will each receive a notification.

Meanwhile, you can start a discussion in your group by being the first to write a post or message to welcome your members and let them know what the group aims to achieve.

The secret and closed groups are more private in that only members can see the posts in their news feed or in the group page itself. In a secret group, only members see the posts and know the other members. The closed group including its members can be seen by anyone but only members see the posts. The open group is the public type in that any Facebook user can see who are members and the messages posted on the group page.
