Facebook already has more than 1.3 billion monthly active users yet not many are very knowledgeable about the tab feature. Most know what a Facebook page is but not the tab.

Basically, a Facebook tab is a separate page that contains text and images. It is part of a Facebook page and can display a wide variety of information about a business or even a promotion or contest. It helps is creating a mini website within Facebook.

On the Timeline, the tabs are shown prominently below your cover image. By default, four tabs are shown there.

If you have more than four tabs, however, you can see the others by clicking the down arrow on the right most side of the tabs.

How to Use the Tab

Businesses often use this tab to welcome new visitors, offers incentives, showcase videos and other content. It allows solo entrepreneurs and companies to explain further what their business is and their offerings. The tab is also an effective way of converting passive visitors to interested fans or even clients.

A Facebook tab to capture attention should have an appropriate title. Some of the common tabs used are the welcome tab, reveal tab and promotion tab. The reveal tab works by showing a page that contains more comprehensive information about the business when a person clicks the Like button. It displays a limited content for visitors who are not yet fans or who have not liked the page.

Below is an example of a Welcome tab with fangate feature.

Another way to use the tab is to provide a link in it to show your other social media profile. You can also include a link there for your website or blog such that when visitors or fans click on it, they will be directed to your site.

Tabs in Facebook can be customized to suit your personal preference or your company’s branding. There are third party apps now that can be used for free to create custom tabs. Most are easy to use and some do not even require HTML knowledge as they can be created using the “what you see is what you get (WYSWYG)” editor with a drag and drop feature.

Many of these tab applications are free to use and can be installed directly from Facebook. You can easily find them by typing their name on the search box and clicking the install app button.

If you’re into business and want to create a more impressive Facebook page, adding custom tabs is the best way to go. You have to give your visitors every reason to like your page so coming up with interesting information and even a contest or promotion would be very effective.

I have created an ebook on how to add custom tabs using third party apps to a Facebook page. It’s in simple English and provides a step-by-step guide to make it easy for you to follow. You can find it here.
