Twitter is now changing the way it displays news. The platform is now giving a prominent spot to live and breaking news videos beside a user’s timeline. Apart from the live videos, related news tweets will also be displayed.

This new feature has already rolled out and started with the live broadcast of the recent Florida shooting incident via WSVN-TV based in Miami. The live video reportedly had more than 50,000 viewers.

Twitter will partner with local news stations to find reliable sources to use particularly during breaking news. This move is part of the campaign to fight fake news now considered a growing problem on social media including Facebook.

Along with the news video on the sidebar is a list of related tweets chosen by algorithms. A user who clicks the feed will then be transferred to a custom timeline where the live footage is displayed.

Twitter’s video general manager Kayvon Beykpour said they are working on new ways to ensure that they only provide credible and relevant information for its users. It is expected that with the live video and related tweets shown side by side, conversation on the platform will increase and prevent misinformation.
